KARACHI: Former Test cricketer and Pakistan coach Waqar Younis believes that his former teammate Wasim Akram should try a coaching role in the national team.
Speaking in ARY News’ show 11TH Hour, Waqar said Wasim is capable of doing a similar job which Ravi Shastri is doing in the Indian team.
“He [Wasim] has a good cricket mind and achievements as well as a coach in Pakistan Super League (PSL). Why shouldn’t he try for a coaching role if it comes in near future,” he said.
“I am serious, and I have talked about this with him a lot of time. He also has a good say in the cricket board and he is one of the biggest cricketing names in the country. See, what Ravi Shastri is doing in the Indian team, leading the coaching panel. Wasim can play the same role in Pakistan,” he added.
Meanwhile, Waqar also believes that there are so many other local names who can try for Pakistan team coaching as it is just a myth that only a foreign coach can do wonders.
“I believe that there are so many other names who can try for Pakistan team coaching. Let’s say, Aqib Javed, he has done coaching courses and is currently coaching Lahore Qalandars. Why doesn’t he try for the Pakistan team’s coaching,” he mentioned.
It must be noted here that the newly elected Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s chairman Ramiz Raja named Australia’s Matthew Hayden and South Africa’s Vernon Philander as consultant coaches for the T20 World Cup. The head coach’s position is vacant and PCB will soon publish an advertisement for the post.
